What is beauty anyway?

By

Mical Imbukwa

”You are so ugly! If it were me in your position I would have committed suicide long time ago!” These words sprung from her mouth and landed in my ears with a hot thud. The intensity with which they landed almost made loose balance but I was not about to let them send me crashing on the ground. Ugly! Suicide! I underlined these words.

Ugly - very unattractive or unpleasant to look at; offensive to the sense of beauty; displeasing in appearance.

Suicide – suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death. Suicide is often carried out as a result of despair, the cause of which is frequently attributed to a mental disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, alcoholism or drug abuse as well as financial difficulties, troubles with interpersonal relationships and bullying.

After assessing the key words, it dawned on me that the lady who had uttered them had a personality disorder. Committing suicide because you are displeasing in appearance? Noooh! I let out a continuous hysterical laughter that one could think a laughing software had been installed in my stomach! Woooh! Tears flowed freely from my eyes. They were tears of joy because somebody had just disgraced herself in my presence. Was there any need for retaliation? I didn’t think so. She had disgraced herself and that was enough for me.

The tongue as they say is a very small organ but it can cause a civil war. When you are so mad and ranting all over the place, think of the intensity of the words you use. There is always tomorrow. A single word can be a cause of antagonism between great friends.  In a conflict, the wise always choose silence and let the fools shine. After a day or two when their actions have dawned on them, the fools realize just how very foolish they were. If I had engaged in a confrontation with my “very beautiful” friend, who knows? Maybe a terrible fight would have ensued and permanent damage would have happened.  Now back to the ugly/beauty agenda.

What is your definition of beauty? What do you perceive as ugly? Do you have that friend you used to refer to as ugly in high school and now he/she is far much ahead of you in life? With her “displeasing face” she is a manager in a big company. She has maybe interviewed you once for a job or she will do so soon. That ugly friend of yours now presents 7 o’clock news on a national television. How do you feel now that the only job you can easily land is Sales and Marketing? I am not saying that Sales and Marketing is a low profile job. I have done it not once, not twice and if a chance presents itself I will do it again but seriously with your great looks, shouldn’t you be working in an international airline because you belong to the sky? Why are you not yet Miss World because according to you, you are the most beautiful girl in the world?

This Karma thing is so real. The people you stepped on, on your way up, God will intentionally put them in your way on your way down so that they can teach you a great lesson of respect. Maybe your Karma is that house girl you really maltreat because she is not in your league. Maybe your Karma is that classmate you really bullied in high school because she/he was so ugly and naïve. Remember, money can divide us into different classes, but before God we are all equal.

So, be good and do good!
