MISS PERFECT NAIROBIAN.
Living in Nairobi for the first time can be a culture shock, especially if you are a woman. To be considered the "It" girl/ woman in Nairobi entails a lot of crazy nitty gritties. In addition, your appearance is your currency. Few people in Nairobi care whether you are wealthy or a high achiever if your not dressed expensively or look like a diva.
Lets face it, Kenya is a country that lives on scandals and wretchedness. This is the reason entertainment blogging has become very popular. Anyway, here are some of the things that an "It" girl Nairobian does:
Hair ~ I means weaves. Short hair is unacceptable so if you don’t have the real deal, fake it. The business of selling hair has a bright future in Kenya.
Mani~Pedis ~ Flawless nail polish, soft hand and good looking feet are a must. Plus, the color of nail polish should be the latest product ( no matter how ugly or expensive it is). All this is done on a weekly basis or as soon as the polish chips.
Facials ~ A smooth face is always preferable to one with pimples or marks so a visit to the salon for a facial is a standard weekend routine. The worst part is that very few women read the ingredients of the creams used. For a natural cream, the first three ingredients should be natural, e.g. an olive oil moisturizer should probably read: Ingredients; Aqua, Glycerine, Olive oil,.... But the common practice is act first, do damage control later.
Make up ~ In addition to a smooth face, you need to look like a model on a magazine cover. An "It" girl has so many creams and make up that to create a new face all together. Instead of using make up for enhancing fearures it is used to create a facade that the world looks at. If you saw the same woman when she woke up, you will be like, " Who are you?"
Big behind ~ Nairobi downtown is well known for "miracle" cures for little behinds. This cure is a miracle because it has a price to pay. In some cases, the price is a life endangering disease.
Trendiest cloths ~ Recently, two sociallites were spotted wearing similar dresses on the same day. This sparked a debate of who had it first or something of the sort. It is unfortunate that wearing the newest product is considered as a " personalized style".  This perception also extends to offices. It is pathetic!!! If you are going to buy a piece of clothing that everyone has, then wear it differently from everyone else. The options are wide;  reap off the hands, add studs, buy a flashy belt, make adjustments to the garment. In short, rock the garment the way no one else has before.
In general, Nairobi women spend a lot to be recognized. Sadly, they change and loose pieces of themselves in the name of beauty. I have never understood the fuss and I probably never will. Buying a garment because it makes me look good in everyone’s eyes or having a certain weave because its the latest sounds pretty shallow to me. What matters is how you think of yourself. That way, nothing defines who you are, not make up, money, looks or clothes. That is what makes you the you, 1.0, the original version and no matter what people say, you will survive. Beauty is fleeting, but personality endures. Do not, however misquote me as to mean taking care of yourself is wrong. Just be careful how you go about it. After all, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and that’s to mean, we are all beautiful in our own capacities.
I rest my case....
